How do you feel you get on eating Gluten?

Last week was celiac disease awareness week in the UK.

In case you don’t know, celiac disease is basically an autoimmune condition caused by the body’s reaction to gluten

(which is found in many things but particularly bread and pasta).

It’s thought that it affects around 1% of people in the UK though only a quarter have been properly diagnosed.

A lot of people I work with who have Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis either know that they have a problem with gluten or do see a big improvement when they take it out of their diet.

That doesn’t mean that they have celiac disease as it’s still possible to be SENSITIVE to gluten without it being an autoimmune condition

(which means that if a doctor has ever tested you for celiac disease and its come up negative that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can eat as much gluten as you want without any problems).

In all honesty, there are very little benefits to gluten from a health perspective and cutting it out can often bring massive benefits and a reduction in symptoms.

However, it’s far from being the ONLY step that needs to be taken.

A lot of people may try cutting out gluten and not notice an immediate benefit and decide that it was pointless.

That’s not necessarily the case.

It could mean you are well on the right track but just need to take some additional steps.

With something as complex and serious as Crohn’s / Colitis, then very rarely is just one thing a contributor of your symptoms.

This can be why even when people suffer with celiac disease and are strict about keeping gluten out of their diet they still don’t feel completely better.

In fact, one study of 465 celiac disease suffers showed that only 8% of them completely healed after following a gluten free diet for at least 16 months!!

What’s more, 65% of these people still had high levels of inflammation in the gut

(obviously VERY relevant to someone with inflammatory bowel disease as reducing your inflammation is the most important step to success).

So what else needs to be done?

There will almost certainly be other parts of the diet playing a part (not JUST gluten), not to mention things such as stress, toxins, infections, gut bacteria, mindset, sleep, detoxification and much more.

That’s not to mention the fact that a lot of “gluten free” foods are filled with absolute rubbish that for many people can cause bigger problems than gluten itself!

You also need to heal your “leaky gut” (or intestinal permeability) which is what I focus on in the last two steps of my “5 Phase Thrive” that I take my clients through.

Leaky gut leads to many symptoms, immune system problems, and food sensitivities, and healing it takes a combination of diet and certain supplements

Addressing all these things is much more complicated than simply cutting gluten out of your diet (though that often is a step in the right direction).

I do just want to reiterate that quite often, once the gut is healed, most people find they are sensitive to far fewer foods than perhaps they are sensitive to at the start of their journey to better health.
